Stay Safe Abroad: A Traveler's Health & Safety Checklist

Adventure is exciting. Getting sick or injured in a foreign country is not. Over the years I've learned that a little preparation goes a long way in keeping you healthy and safe on the road.
Before You Go
Get vaccinated. Research which vaccinations are required or recommended for your destination. Some countries won't let you in without proof of certain vaccinations. Visit a travel health clinic at least 4 to 6 weeks before departure.
Get travel insurance. This is non-negotiable. Medical treatment abroad can be astronomically expensive. Make sure your policy covers medical evacuation, as this can cost tens of thousands if you need it.
Pack a basic medical kit. Pain relievers, antihistamines, anti-diarrhea medication, rehydration sachets, plasters, antiseptic wipes, and any prescription medications you take regularly. Keep prescriptions in their original packaging with your name on them.
While You're There
Stay hydrated. This is especially important in hot climates or at altitude. Carry a water bottle and know whether local tap water is safe to drink. When in doubt, stick to bottled or filtered water.
Be careful with food. Street food is one of the joys of travel, but use common sense. Look for stalls with high turnover. Fresh food means safe food. Avoid anything that's been sitting out in the heat for hours.
Protect yourself from the sun. Sunburn is one of the most common travel ailments. Sunscreen, a hat, and staying in the shade during peak hours aren't optional. They're essential.
Know the emergency numbers. Every country has different emergency numbers. Save them in your phone before you need them. Also know the location of the nearest hospital or clinic to where you're staying.
General Safety
Keep copies of everything. Passport, insurance documents, booking confirmations. Have both digital and physical copies stored separately from the originals.
Be aware of your surroundings. This doesn't mean being paranoid. It means paying attention. Know which areas to avoid, don't flash expensive items, and keep your belongings secure.
Trust but verify. Most people you meet while traveling are genuinely kind. But verify important information independently, like taxi fares, tour operators, and accommodation reviews. A healthy skepticism protects you without closing you off to genuine connections.
Staying safe while traveling isn't about avoiding risk entirely. It's about managing it intelligently. Prepare well, stay aware, and you'll be free to enjoy the adventure without the anxiety.
